Womens Competitive Cricket Comes To Odiham.

by otmg on Monday 23rd May

If evidence were needed to demonstrate the popularity of Womens cricket in the UK then look no further than the events at King Street Odiham on Sunday afternoon. In an historic occasion; the women cricketers of Odiham & Greywell and Yateley met in the opening game of the Hampshire league season in what is believed to be the first Womens competitive match in Odiham’s 247 year history. What followed was a credit to both teams and was thoroughly enjoyed by the large crowd of well wishers including relatives, other players and curious onlookers who came to witness history in the making.

The statistics will show that Yateley managed to scramble home by 3 wickets and one over to spare. But what the figures will not show is the sheer quality of the match and the excellent spirit in which it was played. Indeed, given that most of the Odiham players hadn’t even picked up a bat this time last year, their score of 172 from their 35 overs was astonishing. There were contributions throughout the Odiham order but how appropriate was it that the scoring was led by Theresa Munday who, on her birthday, became the first Odiham lady to pass 50 runs.

Most observers thought Odiham’s total would be unassailable but sadly, in the end it was not to be. Despite Odiham’s miserly bowling, backed up with some tigerish fielding and a late flurry of wickets, Yateley paced their innings expertly and had the quality and experience to see them home.

The eleven exhausted but extremely proud ladies who represented Odiham on this his historic day and who all deserve a mention are : Kerry Hartnett; Jackie Firrell; Theresa Munday; Tina Smee; Jo Greenfield (capt); Lorraine Wiltshire; Becky Hartnett; Charlotte Stamp; Lucy Reader; Sarah Schofield and Liz Godfrey.
