The Swan in North Warnborough Celebrates St George
23 Apr 2008 - 10:00am
Details:
A North Warnborough Inn is getting ready to celebrate St Georges Day on Wednesday 23rd April.
THE SWAN INN in NORTH WARNBOROUGH will be hosting a day to celebrate and commemorate ST GEORGES DAY on Wednesday 23rd April 2008
Owners of The Swan Inn, Jo & Barry Fairhurst are keen to “Fly the Flag for St George” in North Warnborough near Odiham; but it seems that they will be a minority doing so despite a strong movement U.K. wide and within the Licensing Trade to promote this very English of day’s.
Calls from a cross section of society over the years has resulted in trying to get St Georges Day recognised as a public holiday, as is St Patrick’s in Ireland. The Scottish Parliament has introduced a voluntary Bank Holiday on St. Andrew's Day and the Welsh Assembly agrees that St. David's Day should be a holiday.
Jo Fairhurst has been planning for St Georges Day for several months; the bunting and flags have arrived ready to dress up the inside and out of the Swan Inn. Jo feels strongly that we should enjoy and celebrate St Georges Day and is unsure why the English do not make more effort.
Amongst many of her ideas she has put forward the two most popular are a Children’s ‘Teddy Bear Picnic’ for children under 8’s and a ‘Senior’ Tea Party. Jo said that ‘I felt if we could offer something from the very young to the not so young we would be appealing to those who would get the most from such events’ Jo is eager for the children to come and have some fun, she said; ‘The only thing needed for the children to bring is of course a Teddy; we will provide the picnic and even the flags to wave!’
The Welcome Club in Odiham has said that about 26 of its members are looking forward to being treated to a ‘traditional’ tea party of sandwiches; cakes and of course lots of tea, ‘all the Seniors need to bring is themselves; we are providing the tea and food for them to enjoy’ Jo said.
A recent addition to the Senior Party is a guest performance from the highly acclaimed Hart Male Voice Choir.
‘I am really so pleased and very grateful to the Choir for agreeing to this guest performance to conclude the tea parties’ Jo commented.
The Teddy Bears Picnic will be from 4.00 until 5 p.m. and the Senior Tea will be from 5.30; the Hart Male Voice Choir will arrive from 6.45 and be at The Swan Inn until approximately 7.30. Any local residents of North Warnborough are invited to hear the Choir’s performance; and also any under 8’s or ‘Seniors’ are also invited to the tea parties; but please check availability before the events.
