Angell Piano Trio Concert

27th Apr 2008

Angell Piano TrioBates nvh (nvh being the initials of Nash Vann Hooker – local firms of solicitors which have been incorporated into the local Bates nvh network of local offices in Fleet, Hartley Wintney, Hook and Odiham) are sponsors of the Angell Piano Trio. The latest of a series of concerts sponsored by the firm will be held in All Saints Parish Church Odiham on Sunday 27 April 2008 commencing at 7.30 pm.

The proceeds from the concert are in aid of the organ appeal. The appeal, which was launched on 17 June 2007, has already made significant progress in raising the £380,000.00 target required to enable the new organ to be installed. It will be dedicated to the memory of Mr Ian Ledsham, a talented and enthusiastic former organist and choirmaster, who tragically lost his life in a car accident in 2005. More information about the project can be found on the church website www.allsaintsodiham.org.

The programme for the evening includes Beethoven Piano Trio in C Minor, Opus 1 No. 3, Martinu Duo for Violin and Cello No. 2 H371 and Schubert Trio in B Flat D898.

The Angell Piano Trio is one of the UK’s most established chamber music ensembles, having remained unchanged since its formation in 1991 at the Britten-Pears School. After their triumphant Carnegie Hall debut in 2000, the New York Times wrote “It would be hard to imagine a more powerful performance, every note beautifully polished, balancing fire with rigor”.

The trio has also performed at major venues and series in Europe, including Wigmore Hall, Barbican and South Bank Centres, alongside such illustrious groups as the Alban Berg and Emerson Quartets and the Beaux-Arts Trio. Regularly appearing at festivals in the UK, the trio has twice been Ensemble-in-Residence at Aldeburgh and continue this post at the University of Essex. From September 2005 they took up the post of Ensemble-in-Residence at Radley College, Oxford. They also play regularly at the Holywell ‘Coffee Concerts’ in Oxford on Sundays at and at Conway Hall in Red Lion Square in London.

The three members of the Angell Piano Trio are internationally renowned. Frances Angell, born in Jamaica, studied piano with Neil Immelman at the Royal College of Music where she won several prizes. Recently Frances has been invited to record a CD with the soprano Suzanne Teufel. Jan is a former prize-winner in the German Young Musician of the Year Competition. Apart from his work with the Trio, Jan Schmolck is the leader of the Orchestra of St. Johns Smith Square, and Principal of Second Violins at the Royal Opera House. Richard May is one of Britain’s most outstanding cellists. Besides playing regularly with the Angell Trio he has performed as soloist with orchestras such as the Ulster Orchestra and the BBC Phil. He teaches at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and at Wells Cathedral Specialist Music School. For more information about The Angell Piano Trio visit www.angelltrio.com
