Here is what a Blues fan in Oxfordshire saw...
Copicatz
Cherry Tree, Steventon
As they used to say "the weekend starts here!" and it certainly does the first Friday of each month at the Cherry Tree, Steventon, here you are guaranteed a great Blues band in a friendly, character pub serving real ales. This month it was the turn of Copicatz, a new band to the scene, but one that I'd had the pleasure of hearing rehearse a week or so earlier, and so had an inkling of what was to come. The line-up is Cliff Gater on Guitar, Jim Riley on amplified acoustic Guitar and vocals, Sheila Riley on Bass and "Badger" on Drums.
The band plays a mixture of Blues classics and Rock n Roll favourites. They got straight down to business with the Ry Cooder song "Little Sister" to the delight of the enthusiastic and attentive audience filling the pub. The Chuck Berry songbook was visited with "Nadine" and we were able to singalong with "Sweet Home Chicago". One of my favourites "Route 66" got an airing at speed and the first set was drawn to a close with a fine rendition of "Every Day I Have the Blues". The balance of acoustic rhythm guitar and electric solos works very well on these songs, and Jim & Cliff are able to augment each others talents to the full.
Cliff goes into "Hank" mode to open up the second set with a Cliff classic hit "Move It", some of the audience were even able to demonstrate the "Shadows Walk". We also heard "Red House" and a fine version of "Johnny B. Goode". More of those great standards, that are really good to hear as the evening goes on, were executed with aplomb, such as "Key To The Highway", "Little Red Rooster" and "Shakin' All Over". Sadly it was over all too soon and the band closed with "Got My Mojo working", to a great round of applause.
The Rhythm section put in a sterling and tight sound all night. This is a great band for introducing people to the Blues "gently" or for having a Blues dance party night. Well worth catching when in your area.
